About This Quote

I think that my job is to observe people and the world, and not to judge them. I always hope to position myself away from so-called conclusions. I would like to leave everything wide open to all the possibilities in the world. Having started out as a medical doctor, it seems clear that as a physician I am expected to make judgments about people.

However, as a poet, I do believe that it is important for me not to judge anybody. We often see doctors as those people who are supposed to make judgments about what's going on with somebody's health. The difference between a doctor and a poet is that a doctor must make a diagnosis and a poet must make a hypothesis.

A doctor does not have the luxury of leaving things wide open, finding all the possibilities in life without deciding which ones are most likely true or false. Hopefully, as a physician, you understand this and try not to make anyone feel guilty or bad about themselves. Don't be too quick to pass judgment on others, but don't be blind either.

Nothing is black and white in this world, so whatever you decide must be done with careful consideration of all the facts at hand.
